View Full Version : Protege Intake Mani Install

OK so having some issues here getting my fuel rail attached to my SU mani. Also replacement EGR pipe is not matching up either.

Rails are stock, manifold is the 626-style and has now been ported, polished and scored.

I am concerned also about the injector fitment. The injectors are nearly flush on the stock IM. When fit on the SU Mani they seem recessed a 1/2"

Other minor issues include:
-re-routing multiple vacuum sources
-rear support bracket is 2 to 3" away from thread opening on IM.
-need longer studs to use with spacer

I emailed Cullen to take a look at this thread. Have you called him about this? It seems like it might be in depth and over the phone might be the best method.

the protege went through a recall for the intake manifold. in the recall if the shutter valves came loose they replaced the intake manifold with an "updated" one. With the updated manifold there was some communication issues and the holes for the fuel rail were located in different spots.so they came out with an "updated" fuel rail and that is what I am assuming what is in your car. I can check to make sure. just need your vin #. I might have one at work I'll look tomm :)

for what ever reason he has an updated fuel rail. Can you take a pic of the setup. With the new manifold and your fuel rail. I am sure I have a rail around. I'll match it up with one of cullens to make sure it fits.

My car was not in the recall.
I will take a picture but the rail is re-attched to stock mani now

What about the EGR pipe and the depth of the injector recess?

It seems as if there is a fitment issue though, which is odd.

Crazee D
01-08-2007, 01:47 PM
the piece fits, but the fuel rail has no way to bolt up to it. EGR is also not lining up.

I talked to my parts guy and he verified there was a production change for that year. the change came when the recall came out. So you have the updated fuel rail. To fix it get the previous rail. Check your local junk yard or even ask the tech at your mazda dealer to see if they have one. I had 3 or 4 but tossed them about 3 months ago. If not your dealer can get one. We have some in stock at ours.

I've seen more than a few Protege fuel rails. They all look like mine.

1. Can you provide the part numbers for the correct and incorrect rails?
2. Do u have a pic of the correct one?
3. What about the the EGR location?
4. And the fuel injector depth?

Thank you

According to Jason at Montgomery Mazda:

Before 7/03 production part # FS7E 13150A $90
rear mounting tab/bracket should say "FS7E"

After 7/03 part# FP49 13150C - upgraded fuel rail.

wonderful, another weekend will pass without finishing this

Considering boring out injector ports
and fabbing an adapter bracket

Anyone else here think that painting the mani is a BAD idea?
As far as the paint acting like an insulator?

Crazee D
01-13-2007, 09:59 PM
What about a flexible egr pipe?
or delete kit?

any advice at all?
Could u send me a fuel rail and answer me about the injectors PLEASE!!

I could use some help, I feel like I'm doin it all myself!
I need to know a larger TB that'll fit!

You mention the fuel rail #'s. where does yours fit in? Is it correct, or is it the wrong one? Logic makes me think that you need the proper fuel rail, since it does not fit. Yours falls in the latter, you need an earlier, correct?

As far as painting it, I would hold off on that for the exact reason you pointed out. It will keep in the heat.

As far as requesting parts to be sent by SU, I recommend calling them directly to discuss that, as they are the ultimate decision-makers. They can order OEM parts, I know that.

Crazee D

I found someone with the earlier style fuel rail.
From the pics it looks the same as mine.

If u look at the mounting points you can see that the stocker mounts from the top and my SU mani is from the side!!

Crazee D
01-17-2007, 04:06 PM
I have little confidence that this older stock rail will fit either.

A friend on another forum provided me with pics of 2 different 626 manifolds. I think this is the root of the problem.

Notice that the mounting points are not the same.

We had palooza this weekend and I have more calls and emails to return than George W. I havent even been on here to catch up with you guys. I am hurrying.

The manifold is not familiar at all. It doesn't look like the manifolds we stock here. It has been so long I don't recall the order details. For all we know this could be some other manifold, it has been 18some months...

Thanks man...

Here's my concern now.
If I swap out the other injectors and rail Iwith the "older style" u can bet i'll be openening a whole new can o worms.

Are the injectors the same flow rate?
Will the fuel lines meet up / reach?

What else? who knows?
Are there any part numbers to ID what aftermarket injectors will swap or fit?

Crazee D
01-29-2007, 08:43 AM
Is there a way to positively ID which casting this is?
What YEAR 626 did it belong too?

I have been hunting for a while now.
I was hoping to try and find aftermarket 626 parts for the fuel rail and injectors.
Any input is appreciated.
