Courtesy of Andreas on Mazda3forums. As far as has been tested, this only works on the 2006 and newer Mazda3. Unfortunately for me, no one can make it work on Mazda6... :(
with car off,
1. Press and hold down CD and AM/FM buttons
2. Turn key to ACC On. This is the click just before the engine starts.
3. The display will read, "DIS ON".
4. Release the CD and AM/FM buttons.
5. Turn off and restart the car.
6. Now press the Set button and cycle through your avg. mpg, miles until empty, current mpg, and avg mph.

aparrently some speeds are leaving the facotry without this being activated. i beleive it is supposed to be there on grand touring 3 models and speed3. lower trim level mazda3's are not supposed to have the feature, but with the procedure, any mazda3 2006 and up that doesnt have it can. and to answer your question, it displays on the radio display in the spot where the clock is. the tripometer isnt affected.

I would be flipping pissed off without it, knowing others do. This is a really cool trick!!

im certainly jealous. the display in the 6 supports it, you can see the characters. just no one has been able to activate it... sucks...

'06 M3 Sport. Worked very well. In Canada use the info button instead of "set".
Not the most accurate, but better than nothing. Thanks guys!
